He clapped Knowles on the shoulder and suggested they take advantage of the grog being handed around before none was left. Their victory had come at a price, as all too many victories do, but there had been victory, and at least they were alive to celebrate it.

CHAPTER THIRTEEN: CAP’N’S AT THE HELM

With the battle won and the joy of victory settling down, Reynard was consulting with Sabatini, Tynan, and Henry Harrison, a native of Charleston and the Predator’s master carpenter. They were back on board the Predator, having weighed anchor and evaluated the damage to both ships and their own losses.

“Mr. Harrison, are the ships seaworthy enough for us to return to Kingston?” Reynard asked Harrison.

“The Predator should not have any difficulties,” Harrison said as he idly ran his thumb across the scar on his chin. “As for the King’s Ransom, I’m not sure I’d trust her in the condition she’s in. The gunners did their work a little too well. I’d prefer at least two days, but one should suffice if I have enough hands assisting me.”

“Make it one,” Reynard said. “I’m impatient to return with my prize. Mr. Tynan, I want you to supervise the repairs to the King’s Ransom. Once those are completed to Mr. Harrison’s satisfaction, select a skeleton crew to sail her back to Kingston under your command.”

Tynan was beaming with pride. “Aye, Captain!” he said as he followed Harrison back to the King’s Ransom.
